Raster/GIS Cartography Assistant - #I0017

Silver Spring, MD

Position Description

Paid, full-time, 12-month duration.

In the United States, all official nautical raster and paper charts are produced by NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS), Marine Chart Division (MCD). The Nautical Chart is a fundamental tool of marine navigation and is produced by first scanning at high resolution the original color separates into digital raster files. MCD updates these digital raster files using in- coming source data as part of an ongoing process to create a Raster Nautical Chart.

OCS and its sister offices, the National Geodetic Survey and the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products, collect marine navigation data from a multitude of sources in addition to NOAA's own hydrographic survey data. MCD combines and uses these data and technologies to construct and maintain its suite of 1,100 charts, nine Coast Pilot publications, and related marine products necessary to safely navigate the nation's waterways. These Nautical Charts cover over 95,000 miles of shoreline, including the Great Lakes, and about 3.4 million square nautical miles of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, an area that reaches 200 miles offshore.

The specific internship available is in one of MCD's Raster Nautical Chart Production Branches. The intern will be given a broad overview of the technology and procedures used to generate our nation's navigational products. They will work with many experts in the field of cartography and will learn how to maintain and update Raster Nautical Charts from original source data. The intern will learn how Raster Nautical Charts are produced in a digital environment and about the relationship between vector and raster data as it applies to traditional Nautical Chart Production. The intern will be trained to use MicroStation/IRASB, MCD's Computer Aided Design Software to assist with Nautical Chart updates, enabling timely delivery of new editions of charts and chart updates to the mariner.
